Confluence - Blender CON 2022 - City Life Shots

Blender Conference 2022
Saturday 29th October - 10:00am Amsterdam Time - 9:00am UK
"Procedural Fantasy City Creation Using Geometry Nodes"

"The evolution of Geometry Nodes in Blender has enabled the creation of increasingly larger procedural projects and setups over the past year. This talk focuses on the construction of a fantasy city from basic building blocks.
Starting with a simple idea, a city layout and terrain are generated, buildings are grown from the ground up, populated with props and shaded procedurally."

I think I finally more or less wrapped up the preparation for this, so here's an advert(?). I believe you can tune in live to watch me forget my words in real time! I made a whole bunch of paintings, breakdown videos, WIP progress shots of this, so hopefully it'll be a fun watch.

Tell your friends, family and neighbours dog to tune in!

For vehicles I did a mix of photobashing and stable diffusion.

The fun thing about procedural cities is that you get to hunt for nice photography spots, that was my favourite part at the end.

When in doubt, add more wires.

Blender Conference 2022 Presentation

Procedural house setup. Buildings and props grown from a floorplan, which I draw manually in the video, but for the city was generated from the tops of the tower structures.

Reasonable representation of what everything looks like without Atmos, DMP, comp tricks.

Different types of districts, markets, housing, temples, minarets, parks.

Procedural building setup with a different set of elements/shaders/style. Still WIP, after this project I started doing adjustment work to make it more predictable/controllable etc.

Some PNG textures which I used for fences etc. Originally had a lot of this stuff as geo, but it added a lot of weight to the project for little purpose at the scale of the city.
